DARRYLL OWEN

My name is Darryll Owens, and I am a junior majoring in Psychology at the University of Texas at San Antonio. I am originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, and was born into a single-parent home with seven siblings. Upon graduating high school, I experienced difficulty signing up for college as a first-generation student.  Experiencing firsthand the hardships of being a first-generation student, I developed a passion for helping future first-generation students in education. I found that first-generation is defined differently depending on the institution. As an IES Pathways fellow, I have been working closely with mentors in research to objectively define first-generation status to promote equality and provide resources for those in need.
