Ashley Motola is a second year Cuban-Mexican American at the University of Texas At San Antonio pursuing a degree in Biomedical Engineering. Growing up with immigrant Latin American parents she noticed the health and educational gaps within the Latino community. She is currently a NIH ESTEEMED scholar doing research in the biomedical sciences as well as an IES Pathways fellow. Through Pathways, she plans to analyze the Biomedical Engineering degree plan at the University of Texas at San Antonio, a Hispanic Serving Institution, to see what complexities affect graduation rate and how the degree can be improved to accommodate the population of students that come into the program. Ashley hopes to increase STEM representation from marginalized communities and serve as a mentor for the future generation of latinos in STEM. She plans on pursuing a Ph.D in Biomedical engineering and working in industry as a research scientist designing medical therapies to detrimental medical conditions plaguing society.
